Aerospace: Industry Consolidation

Industry Consolidation

The Electronics/Systems sector has already seen a wave of consolidation leading to the emergence of a dozen "Tier 1" suppliers. However, the leading aircraft manufacturers’ desire to focus on architecture (as opposed to systems design), combined with the technological step-change sought for the A320 and B737 successors, will likely challenge the current hierarchy among those Tier 1s.

In stark contrast, the Aerostructures sector is still widely fragmented, with considerable inefficiencies. Industry restructuring, refinancing, and consolidation are long overdue but are also currently hampered by the liquidity crisis. In addition, currency fluctuations and economic risk are driving companies to reconsider geographic expansion and investment.
